Central Salford
Central Salford is responsible for the regeneration of over
2,000 ha covering four distinct areas: Ordsall Waterfront,
Pendleton, the MediaCityUK development, and Central Salford – which
stretches from the University of Salford to Greengate.
Key Central Salford Projects
- Work is currently underway on the Salford Quays waterfront to
turn the 80 ha MediaCityUK site into an international centre for
excellence in the Digital & Creative sector – one of the key
sectors supported by the NWDA.
- As well as being home to five BBC departments it will have
workspace to house more than 1,100 creative and related businesses,
including start-ups. The site will actively encouraging
independents and smaller enterprises through affordable space and
practical business and industry-specific support.
- The site, which is already linked to Manchester city centre by
the Harbour City stop of the Eccles Metrolink line, will be a
network of streets, squares, boulevards and waterfront piazza.
- Exchange Greengate, in the Central Salford area, is the
development of a 13 ha urban quarter between the cities of
Manchester and Salford. The project – which is set to begin
mid-2009 – involves three distinct areas: Urban Cove, which will
help bring the Irwell back to life, with a new bridge and water
features; Greengate Link, a new pedestrian route linking the two
cities; and Greengate Square, the area’s new green heart.
- Chapel Street will become a new city centre for Salford, with
plans to reinvigorate many of the architecturally important
buildings that now lie derelict, The development of the area will
focus on shops, bars and recreation facilities, as well as 1,600
new homes.
- Irwell City Park will give the city an 8km route of walkways
and cycleways through Central Salford and into the heart of Salford
Quays. Also linked through an extended walkway will be Ordsall
Waterfront. The masterplan of the riverside area, put together by
Salford Central Urban Regeneration Company, was used as the basis
for Planning Guidance of the area.
- Pendleton is set to become Central Salford’s main shopping
area, with proposed new large retail store and the redevelopment of
the existing Shopping City. The focus of the new shopping area will
be a new public space.
