Northwest Science Council

The Northwest Science Council is a partnership of leading business, academic and economic development organisations committed to establishing a common vision for science in the region and developing strategy to make things happen.

Chaired by Mr Roger Platt, the Council is working to build England's Northwest into something special in science.

The Northwest Science Council brings together business, university and science partners in the region to promote England's Northwest as a world-class area for science, attract investment and talent and drive innovation. The aims of the Science Council over the next 3 - 5 years are to:

  • Grow and maintain world-class infrastructure for the academic and industry base.
  • Enhance the creation and transfer of knowledge.
  • Develop, attract and retain high quality people.
  • Close the R&D funding gap between private and public sector.
  • Promote the image of the Northwest as a vibrant hotbed of scientific endeavour

In order to deliver these aims, the Council will work through partnership among all the elements of the science base. In the Northwest, more than elsewhere, the private sector accounts for the lion's share of R&D investment and public-private partnership is vital. There is a dynamic interplay between the components and each feeds off the other. The regional science partners are the region's leading science-based companies, its universities, the regional NHS and hospital trusts, and research organisations.
