Science Infrastructure

The Northwest has a programme of science infrastructure development, investing in sites and facilities tailored to the needs of high-tech tenants. Significant amounts of both public and private investment is being targeted to develop knowledge nuclei of international significance:

Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus

Government agreement has been obtained to establish Daresbury as one of two strategic science sites in the UK (the other being Rutherford Appleton Laboratories in Oxford).  The Agency has invested over £50 million to develop the Campus. As well as securing Daresbury’s future as a centre of excellence for research and development, the park is also supporting high value investments and university spin-outs.

The Campus builds on the worldwide reputation of CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory, one of the UK’s major research facilities. Developments on the site include The Cockcroft Institute, a National Centre for Accelerator Science and Daresbury Innovation Centre, a state-of-the-art facility designed to attract science and technology based businesses to the region.  View a map of Daresbury Innovation Centre.

Also taking place to support the vision for Daresbury has been the continuing work to design and build the 4th Generation Light Source prototype (4GLS) – 4GLS is a potential £120 million project for Daresbury which aims to build a world-leading high intensity light source for research.

Liverpool Science Park - A science park development in the heart of Liverpool. The Innovation Centre is now open.

Infolab 21 - ICT incubation and knowledge transfer facilities at Lancaster University.

Core Technology Facility - A state-of-the art biotechnology and hi-tech incubation facility at the University of Manchester. .
