Enhancing Quality of Life: Strategy & Policy

The Regional Economic Strategy sets out what the NWDA needs to
do to support quality of life in the region for both residents and
visitors.
Regional Economic Strategy
Everything we do is set out in the Regional Economic Strategy.
The strategy is split up into bite-size chunks and Quality of Life
is one of those chunks. (The others are Business, Skills &
Education, People & Jobs and Infrastructure.)
Within the Enhancing Quality of Life section, we have a number
of jobs to do. We need to make the Northwest a better place to
live, deliver a world-class offering for all visitors and
residents, promote the region as a place to host major events, and
highlight the region’s tourism successes.
Strategy for Tourism in England’s Northwest
The Strategy for Tourism in England’s Northwest 2003/10 sets out
the strategic context and vision for Tourism in England’s
Northwest. Beneath the Regional Tourism Strategy sit a number of
frameworks, including: the Visitor Information Framework, the
Business Tourism Framework and the Tourism Research Strategy.
Strategy for Major Events
The major events held in the Northwest are as much for those
people who live in the region as for those who visit. Developing
and marketing the region’s image is an important strategic
objective for the future regeneration of England’s Northwest. The
Regional Economic Strategy identifies the implementation of a
Strategy for Major Events for the region as a key activity in the
delivery of this objective.
The Northwest is the first region in England to develop a major
events strategy. It has resulted in a world-class programme of
events that are distinctive and capable of attracting large numbers
of visitors from outside the region, while significantly enhancing
the profile of the region.
Sports Sector Strategy
England’s Northwest has a rich sporting heritage. Home to some
of the world’s leading sports brands, the region is also host to
internationally renowned sport competitions and has an array of
world-class sport venues and facilities.
The Northwest also has a large and diverse sport industry and is
seen as the strongest in the UK outside London. It comprises not
only a robust cluster of sport businesses, but a significant number
of goods and services suppliers in industries such as construction,
digital & creative, financial & professional manufacturing,
logistics and visitor economy.
The strategy focuses on four key areas that have the potential
for economic growth in the Northwest, including:
- Supporting the growth of new and existing sport businesses
including professional sport clubs, major sport venues and
specialist businesses supplying the sector
- Increasing innovation to improve product development,
particularly within the manufacture of advanced flexible
materials
- Promoting activity which levers investment into the region,
including the outdoor adventure market
- Maximising the economic, social and health benefits of sport to
individuals and communities across the Northwest

One of the priority actions highlighted in the strategy is to
establish a forum for the sector, to be coordinated by the
NWDA.
The forum will:
- provide strategic direction
- influence the public sector delivery of actions
- provide advice and influence the leverage of investment into
the region
- help coordinate and deliver a sporting legacy from London
2012.
Members of the forum will act as 'champions' for the Northwest
sport sector on a regional, national and international
platform.
Over the coming months, work will begin to recruit members to
this forum. Anyone who is interested in being considered for
membership of the forum should email anne.thompson@nwda.co.uk and
enclose details of the experience that they would bring to the
role. The role is undertaken on a voluntary basis and includes
reimbursement of expenses.
London 2012 Tourism Strategy
The NWDA is supporting the Government’s London 2012 tourism
strategy,
Winning: A Tourism Strategy for 2012 and
Beyond. The aim of the strategy is to maximise the
financial benefits of London 2012 Games for the UK tourism
industry.
