Housing

The Government set out an ambitious national housing agenda in its Sustainable Communities plan. A core objective is to address the causes and consequences of housing markets suffering from low demand or streets of abandoned houses.

The Government identified four housing market renewal (HMR) pathfinder areas in the Northwest, from a total of nine areas nationally. These will be the focus of strategies to radically change the condition and prospects for those communities with the largest amount of low demand housing. The HMR areas in the Northwest are Manchester/Salford, Merseyside, Oldham/Rochdale and East Lancashire.

The Northwest Regional Housing Board (NWRHB) was established in 2003 to ensure delivery of the policies set out in the Sustainable Communities plan. The NWRHB, which includes representatives from Government Office for the Northwest, the Housing Corporation, the NWDA, the Northwest Regional Assembly, English Partnerships and the Northwest Housing Forum, has prepared a Regional Housing Strategy. This provides the basis for advice to ministers on the priorities for strategic housing investment in the region.

The NWDA, alongside these and other partners, is supporting the region’s pathfinder areas in developing and delivering fundamental strategies for change. The Regional Housing Strategy, available to download below, provides an indication of the areas where the NWDA feels it can make a contribution to the delivery of the housing agenda in the region.
