Tourism Strategy

The Agency has the strategic responsibility for tourism in the Northwest. This strategic role has led to the creation of five sub-regional tourist boards, which are the primary delivery partners for tourism in the region, and the Tourism Forum for England’s Northwest.

The Strategy for Tourism in England’s Northwest serves to guide the continued growth and success of the industry. It outlines the steps needed in order to achieve the shared vision of delivering a world-class offering for all visitors to England’s Northwest. This is supported by the strategies produced by the individual tourist boards, the Strategic Marketing Framework and a Strategy for Major Events. (also see our Major Events page)

In addition, the Business Tourism Framework and Visitor Information Framework add depth to the tourism strategy, whilst the Sustainable Tourism Framework provides a sound foundation for all marketing and development outlined in the main strategy. The Tourism Research Strategy for England’s Northwest ensures that we have a strong evidence base for all of the actions outlined in the Strategy for Tourism.

Tourism Research Strategy

These strategies were developed and are being delivered in part through the Tourism Forum for England’s Northwest. The Tourism Forum brings together the five tourist boards, the NWDA, the Northwest Regional Assembly (NWRA), Culture Northwest, business people, independent tourism experts and the national tourism body VisitBritain.

The Tourism Forum has been created to drive up the quality and range of facilities and attractions in the Northwest, as well as to market the region to an increasingly broad range of potential visitors.

The creation of the five new tourist boards has opened up new opportunities for local authorities to engage with the tourism agenda, both strategically and operationally. The NWDA has set out its thinking on how local authorities and tourist boards can best work together to take forward the ambitious agenda for tourism in the publication Great Destinations.

In addition the NWDA is working on a Cluster Development Framework, which will identify an approach and way of working that supports the Visitor Economy model in a practical way, linking the marketing, business development and support, skills and productivity activities of the tourist boards and their partners.
