Sustainable Consumption & Production
Sustainable Consumption & Production Action Plan
In Europe and the rest of the World there is a drive towards low
carbon, resource efficient living and working and this presents
both opportunities and a challenge for our region. The Northwest is
one of the first region’s to develop a Sustainable Consumption and
Production Action Plan.
Sitting alongside the Climate Change Action Plan 2010-2012
and the updated Regional
Waste Strategy, the Agency, together with partners will work
alongside the public, private and third sector to achieve a more
productive, resource efficient, low carbon region by 2020.
Everything the Northwest uses, produces and consumes impacts on
our ecological footprint and our economy. It is a significant
challenge to become a leader in sustainable solutions and influence
our consumption and use of resources. There are many
different ways to achieve this. To steer progress towards this we
have agreed the following outcomes and pulled together key existing
and new activities to create a roadmap of 14 transformational
actions with milestone targets for 2012.
Outcomes
- Transformation of resource use with the region consuming
sustainably
- Businesses are sustainable and provide resource-efficient,
low carbon products and services
- Waste, when unavoidably produced, is seen as a valuable
resource
- The Northwest’s Low Carbon and Environmental Goods and Services
sector (LCEGS) is providing sustainable solutions
- The public sector is leading the way - transforming its use of
resources

Regional Waste Strategy
There is a significant opportunity to position the Northwest as
one of the most effective and innovative regions in the UK for
waste management practices. The strategy provides a framework to
deliver the necessary waste infrastructure and skills to meet the
region’s short, medium and long term needs and support sustainable
consumption and production.
