Carlisle College Building Blocks in Place

Carlisle College is about to start work on building a new £9M facility to replace redundant buildings on the Victoria Road site.

Steve Broomhead, Chief Executive of the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), will present a signed contract for almost £5M which is contributing to the College’s new £9.5M scheme.

He will be joined by Cllr Duncan Fairbairn, Cabinet member responsible for schools and learning at Cumbria County Council, which has contributed £3M to the College’s development.

Both guests will be welcomed by David Carter, Chair of Governors and Moira Tattersall, Principal.  They will visit the site of the planned new build and see how students are following the work of the land surveyors.  There will then be an opportunity to admire the handiwork of electrical and construction students who are putting the finishing touches to new plastering bays in the construction workshops that they have built themselves.

David Carter Chair of Governors said:

“The new capital investment in the College will generate jobs and economic activity in Carlisle that is greatly welcomed.  It is very fitting that we take this opportunity to showcase the work of our students who are hoping to secure employment as apprentices in the building industry in the coming months”.

Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive, NWDA said:

“Strengthening further education in Cumbria is vital to transforming the regional economy. The NWDA works hard to ensure education, access to skills and quality training plays a key role in helping to develop the knowledge, skills and creativity required to give the region a competitive edge. I am delighted to visit the College today and will continue to work closely with staff and students in the future.”

Cllr Duncan Fairbairn, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member responsible for schools and learning, said:

“This is a significant investment in the college’s new facility and also a significant investment in the education of young people in Carlisle and across North Cumbria. The way the county council, the NWDA and Carlisle College have worked together to get us to where we are today is a great example of triumph over adversity. We can all be very proud of what’s been achieved.”

Tenders for the construction of the new building on Strand Road are currently being evaluated and a preferred contractor will be selected in the next few weeks.
